Community Health

In 2009, a consortium of organizations led by SIPA was a awarded a 5-year grant from First Five Los Angeles to research the issues of maternal alcohol and drug use and to develop an advocacy/policy campaign to increase positive, nurturing environments for young children in the Filipino American Community.  The study’s principle partners include SIPA, the Asian Pacific Health Care Venture and Pilipino Workers’ Center.  It will serve as model for other immigrant and ethnic communities struggling with similar issues and will include the development of various survey instruments, focus groups and interviews with community-based service providers, practitioners and leaders.  It will also lead to the creation of a county-wide Filipino Health Coalition (FHC) to conduct long-term education, advocacy and policy efforts.
